What's involved:

What a Custom Interior Railing Actually Involves

A railing off a shelf only fits a standard size for a standard staircase. Our process starts with your exact stair, then builds a railing around it, not the other way around.

  • ✓ Field measured to your exact staircase
  • ✓ Wrought iron, steel, stainless steel, or aluminum
  • ✓ Powder coated, galvanized, patina, or hand painted finishes
  • ✓ Straight runs, curves, and switchback staircases
  • ✓ Baluster and newel post styles built to match your home
  • ✓ Designed to meet Connecticut building code requirements

Signs It's Time for a New Interior Railing

These are the most common reasons homeowners call us about a staircase railing.

01

Wobbly or Loose Railing

A railing that shifts under a normal grip has usually failed at the post or bracket, not just the surface.

02

Visible Rust or Corrosion

Rust that has broken through the finish is often more than cosmetic, especially at welds and floor connections.

03

More Allergy or Splinter Risk

Chipped paint and rough wood parts on an old railing are common at the exact spot everyone grabs.

04

Doesn't Meet Code

Older railings were often built before current spacing and height requirements, which matters most with kids or resale.

05

Before a Renovation or Move

A staircase remodel, a home sale, or a new baby are natural points to replace a railing that is on its last legs.

06

It Just Looks Dated

A railing that clashes with an otherwise updated staircase or entryway is one of the fastest visible fixes.

What Affects the Cost of an Interior Railing

Every staircase is different, so we don't quote sight unseen. Here's what actually goes into a quote.

Total Linear Footage

Longer runs and multiple flights mean more material and shop time.

Material Choice

Steel, stainless steel, wrought iron, or aluminum each carry a different cost.

Amount of Custom Detail

A clean modern rail costs less than hand forged scrollwork.

Finish

Powder coating, galvanizing, patina, or a hand painted color.

Site Conditions

Stair shape, existing structure, and access all factor into the quote.

Questions:

Interior Railing Questions, Answered

The questions homeowners ask most before starting an interior railing project.

How much does an interior stair railing cost?
Cost depends on the total length of railing, the material you choose, and how much custom detail goes into the design. A clean modern rail in steel costs less than a hand forged wrought iron design with scrollwork. The most accurate way to get a number is a free in home visit, where we measure your staircase and talk through options.
How long does the process take from quote to installation?
After we visit your home and take measurements, you'll usually have a written proposal within two to three business days, with photos and full project details included. Fabrication and installation timelines vary by project and current shop schedule.
Can you install a railing on an existing wood staircase?
Yes. Many of our interior railings go on existing wood treads and stringers. We measure your current staircase and design a railing that fits what's already there, whether you're keeping the wood or updating it at the same time.
What materials do you offer for interior railings?
We work in wrought iron, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, with finishing options including powder coating, galvanizing, patina, and hand painted finishes. Which one makes sense depends on your home's style and how the staircase gets used.
Do interior railings need to meet code?
Yes. Interior stair railings and handrails need to meet Connecticut building code requirements for height, spacing, and graspability. We design every railing with those requirements in mind and can walk through the specifics for your project during your consultation.
Do you serve homes outside West Hartford?
Yes. Most of our work is within about ten miles of our West Hartford shop, including Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, and Bloomfield, and we take on projects throughout Central Connecticut depending on scope.
Do I need to know exactly what I want before I contact you?
No. Most homeowners start with a general idea, a photo of a style they like, or just a staircase that needs a new railing. We'll walk you through material, style, and finish options during your consultation.
